It’s been a very good week on the river, with settled conditions and flow rates putting the fish in all the right places. Some decent double figure days, with twenty five fish coming to net on particular drift, have brought a smile to the dial of those fishing with us.

There’s been some very nice fish in the mix as well, with the general condition of the fish improving out of sight in the past month. Plenty of big bellies versus the slim axe handles of October and November.

Bank fishing has been equally as good as the boat, if not better. So many fish are tucked in behind ** THIS INFORMATION IS FOR MEMBERS ONLY. PLEASE LOG IN TO READ ALL OF THIS REPORT’S DETAILS ** Having time to work over these sections of river has been very worthwhile for those fishing on foot.

The lower levels have also given rise, pun intended, to the nightly evening hatches. Plenty of ** THIS INFORMATION IS FOR MEMBERS ONLY. PLEASE LOG IN TO READ ALL OF THIS REPORT’S DETAILS ** and make sure you get your dead drifts happening.

I agree. It’s not rocket science. Actually it’s pretty much the exact opposite. But sometimes these things need to be said and reiterated so that we don’t take ourselves, or what we do, too seriously.

Presentation is the key on evening right now. Get it right and the reward comes in slabs of gold flanked trout!

Having said all of that, daytime fishing has been the mainstay of what we’ve been doing with guiding these past two weeks. Rising fish can be found ** THIS INFORMATION IS FOR MEMBERS ONLY. PLEASE LOG IN TO READ ALL OF THIS REPORT’S DETAILS **

While most fish will eat from the top, you may find that ** THIS INFORMATION IS FOR MEMBERS ONLY. PLEASE LOG IN TO READ ALL OF THIS REPORT’S DETAILS ** . I won’t give away too much information here at this point in time, as the detail will get out in the public domain if I do. Sing out if you want to know more and I’ll fill you in individually on the phone.

In terms of flies, you don’t have to try to hard to catch a fish right now. Or to be more precise ** THIS INFORMATION IS FOR MEMBERS ONLY. PLEASE LOG IN TO READ ALL OF THIS REPORT’S DETAILS **

It’s pretty easy is what I am saying.

At these water levels fish are sitting in all the text book places. I can actually recall at least a dozen times of late where I’ve said ‘there should be a fish right there’ and a fish has taken the fly. The Goulburn isn’t often like that. But it is right now.

For me, the best fishing has been from ** THIS INFORMATION IS FOR MEMBERS ONLY. PLEASE LOG IN TO READ ALL OF THIS REPORT’S DETAILS ** pm, and again for the ** THIS INFORMATION IS FOR MEMBERS ONLY. I’ve spoken a lot about the dry fly fishing, but you shouldn’t underestimate the ** THIS INFORMATION IS FOR MEMBERS ONLY. PLEASE LOG IN TO READ ALL OF THIS REPORT’S DETAILS ** . Anyone wanting to tease up some big fish, should book me for a half day or a three hour drift to **THIS INFORMATION IS FOR MEMBER’S ONLY**. I’m only getting 1:7 fish to actually eat it, but it’s bringing some large fish out and it’s very visual and exciting.

It may seem counter-intuitive to those of us who laud the dry fly fishing of summer, to be throwing **THIS INFORMATION IS FOR MEMBER’S ONLY**. But those willing to vary their methods and open their minds are in for some interesting times in the drift boat. I have a couple of rods set up with the right lines and flies ready to go at all times.

Speaking of drift boat trips, we have at least one boat available every day for the rest of the summer, and our general availability looks like this:

BO JAN 8-22 AVAILABLE DAILY
ANTONY DEC 29 – JAN 22 AVAILABLE DAILY
DAVID AVAILABLE DAILY

Those doing a half day drift for two, anytime this January, February and March, will get a night in our accommodation for $99, or their second night free if booking two. Sorry no gift vouchers on this deal.

We also have one lone spot for our New Zealand trip running MARCH 4-11, 2018. $4590 for a full week of guided fishing, accommodation and meals. Please phone ASAP if you are interested. Further to that, I am in New Zealand with no guiding obligations or set agenda, other than to take photos and ensure that things go smoothly with our groups, hence I am available for guiding by the day.

If you want a day or two or three of guiding in the Southland region between JAN 29 and MAR 11, please phone me to arrange a time.

That’s it for the time being. The fishing is very good right now and I think it will get better with the true arrival of the hoppers and willow grubs.

Speak soon and feel free to reach out with any questions that you have. You can get me on 0418 995 611.

Cheers
Antony
